An elderly penguin at the Columbus Zoo passed away Tuesday night. Secunda was a 20-year-old Humboldt penguin. She outlived the normal life expectancy of his kind by four fish-filled years.
Secunda suffered from heart disease and had been treated for it for a year. She was named for being the second chick hatched at the Zoo in 1997 (“secunda” is Spanish for second).
She will live on through her mate, Watson, and her two chicks. Zoo keepers will remember Secunda fondly for her gentle demeanor and calm personality.
