Counterfeit “funny money” booms in central Ohio

Watch your pocket! The Secret Service has found almost $300,000 in fake cash in central Ohio since the beginning of 2017 – more than half the total amount recovered for ALL of last year. Some authorities believe the huge spike may be related to the ongoing opioid epidemic.

“We want people and businesses to be aware there is aggressive distribution of counterfeit old-style $100s in this area. If they receive an older bill, look for some of the tell-tale counterfeit features, such as missing symbols and lack of detail,” Westerville Detective Sgt. Charles Chandler told 10TV.

These fake bills are often bought online or printed at home. These bills are sometimes stamped with Chinese characters, and the lack security features on newer bills. The Secret Service, which was originally created to combat counterfeit currency, has issued a warning and guide to spotting fake bills.
