A jury decided that Lincoln Rutledge is guilty of 9/11 charges against him regarding the killing of CPD Officer Steven Smith. He is not guilty of attempted murder against two other officers.
Rutledge will be eligible for the death penalty.
In April, officers went to Rutledge’s apartment in Clintonville with a warrant to arrest him for arson. He refused to surrender and was “invoking the Castle doctrine” which would allow him, as a homeowner, to use deadly force if he felt his life was threatened by someone illegally on his property. Though officers had a signed warrant for his arrest.
Officer Smith was standing beside a vehicle outside the apartment when he a bullet struck his head above his left eye.
