Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus found in Franklin County

Mosquitoes trapped near Hilliard have tested positive for West Nile virus. The mosquitoes were captured in Norwich Township. Weekly surveillance of 50 mosquito traps are being conducted throughout the county.

If you get bit by one of these nasty little buggers, chances are you’ll survive.

Twenty to 30 percent of infected people experience fevers, headaches, body aches, vomiting, rashes, and/or diarrhea. Less than 1 percent of cases cause people serious neurological problems. But if you are affected seriously, you will probably have symptoms like disorientation, coma, or maybe even paralysis. Of the less than 1 percent of people who develop serious problems, 1 in 10 die. All symptoms can last several months.

If you’re 60 or older, have cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and/or kidney disease, take extra precaution as you are at the highest risk for severe illness.

Health authorities suggest three things to defend against contracting the West Nile virus:

• Wear insect repellant containing DEET (follow package directions).

• Limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

 • Empty all standing water around your home, such as in planters, containers, pet dishes, bird baths, and tires.
