Today is a new day — yes it is. A new day for cyclists because a new law going into effect today should make Ohio roads just a bit safer for bicyclists. At least that’s the idea behind House Bill 154, which requires motorists to pass bicyclists on the road with no less than a 3-foot cushion.

It is effective starting today, March 21, which marks the 90 days period after the assembly’s approval.

Nearly three years of lobbying by the Ohio Bicycle Federation led to the legislation’s passage. Columbus, along with a three other cities across the state, already had a 3-foot safe-passing ordinance on the books but since it is statewide expect the law to actually be enforced.
