Whitehall Police Department gains four furry legs and a tail

The Whitehall Police Department is getting way furrier with its first ever canine officer. His name is Enzo and he is a very handsome, two-year-old German Shepard all the way from Germany.

Not only will the police department be gaining Man’s Best Friend, but the men and women in uniform will be better equipped to combat the drug problem in the neighborhood.

It’s easy to imagine most officers wanting Enzo as a partner because let’s face it, dogs are much better than people. But Officer Jesse Hackney has been given the distinct honor and privilege of being the pup’s handler. Officer Hackney, who has been with WPD for eight years, had to complete a series of grueling physical and mental tests to be granted this right.

Adding a K-9 unit to a police force can cost anywhere from $60,000- $70,000. Whitehall was able to come up the dough through money seized from multiple drug busts. They’re trying to keep the ball rolling against the drug problem with a second dog officer. They hope to have police pooch #2 ready to go by 2018.
