The Pizzuti Collection’s Groundbreaking Look at Indian Art

At the Pizzuti Collection we believe that art fosters wider cultural understanding and educational exchange, and we work to champion diverse voices from around the globe. Artists have a unique ability to translate the current socio-political state and the work that they do invites viewers to reflect about their community and themselves. We believe that art is fundamental to the development of the individual and the cultural health of the community, especially in these turbulent social and political times.
Many of the Pizzuti Collection’s previous exhibitions have tackled some of these challenging, yet necessary conversations, from US IS THEM, which centered around international artists as critics, to Robert Buck’s States of America, which delved into the psyche of American violence and masculinity, to Cuban Forever Revisited which presented issues of immigration, nationalism, identity and place.
Our upcoming exhibition, Visions From India, is a celebration of two Columbus-based collections that focus on Indian art, offering an unprecedented look at modern and contemporary art from India.
The artists presented here all have ties to India, and the influence of this vast country, with centuries of rich visual history, is evident. India is a rapidly developing region at the forefront of the international stage and has one of the world’s largest populations. With each year that passes, India confronts issues pertinent to our global society, relevant to countries all across the globe. As such, the works presented here bring to mind global and cosmopolitan concerns and encourage audiences to ask questions about globalization, modernization, religion, environmentalism, colonialism, and technology. Visions From India is a remarkable gathering and another opportunity for us to state that “US IS THEM,” that artists from all nations visually declare issues that are relevant to all of us.
The celebration of India, full of color, innovation, and delight, features large-scale installations, lush colorful paintings, video works, and remarkable sculptures from the 21st century. An accompanying exhibition of works by Francis Newton Souza from the significant Columbus-based Rajadhyaksha Collection will present one of the most important 20th century Indian painters, tying together the long, complicated history from Indian independence to contemporary times.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Pizzuti Collection will host an array of programming: Artist Talks (featuring Sudarshan Shetty among others); Poetry Nights (including Ohio’s Poet Laureate Dr. Amit Majmudar); Family Programming with story times in collaboration with the Bexley Public Library; conversations with scholars from The Ohio State University; special events for young professionals and supporters; and musical guests throughout the year.
We are so proud to share this remarkable exhibition with the Columbus community and beyond. Visions From India opens March 10, 2017 and runs until October 28, 2017. General admission is $12. Senior admission is $10. Students are welcome to visit for free. In March, educators and school administrators may visit for free during Educator Appreciation Month, with support from AEP.
