At the one yard line, a strong team of development and progress is up against a defense of 2,100 parking spots; guarding their territory that makes attending a Ohio State football game much easier. Oh do we have here, football fans? The offense is jackhammering through the parking lot and scoring in the end zone. Development and progress have won the game, folks. The parking lots are down forever.

Two large surface parking lots–Polo or Dodd– along Cannon Dr. will permanently close the night of September 4 so that Cannon Dr. can be relocated. Construction will begin the following day and is expected to last through fall of 2019.

The project is called Framework 2.0 and its objective is to support the university’s academic mission and future growth of the Medical Center while also promoting green space. Here are all the ambitions of the project:

  • Straighten and elevate of Cannon Drive
  • Create 12 acres of developable land
  • Serve as future flood protection
  • Create an eventual north-south connection between King and Lane Avenues
  • Enhancing green space in the Olentangy River corridor

According to the Ohio State website detailing the construction, “Cannon Drive will close for construction between 12th Avenue and Medical Center Drive. Access to the SR-315 on-ramp and off-ramp will be maintained during football season – though intermittent closures could occur this fall during overnight hours.”

The site advises people who have parked in either Polo or Dodd lots in the past to:

  • Arrive early
  • Avoid the Medical Center area and expect travel delays
  • Park in the 9th Ave. Garage or in West Campus lots (near Kenny Road)
