Preliminary 2016 opioid overdose numbers released
For the first time, the Ohio Department of Health is releasing preliminary numbers on drug overdose deaths in 2016. This initial data reveals that 3,835 drug overdose deaths happened in Ohio last year. That’s 11 people a day.
ODH gets these numbers from coroners who have six months to complete their investigations. With this delay, final number for 2016 will be crunch a bit later in the summer. OD rates are expected to be much higher once that happens.
Preliminary data for 2016 shows the top five counties prone to overdosing are:
- Cuyahoga (512)
- Montgomery (317)
- Franklin County (313)
- Hamilton (302)
- Summit County (258)
In 2017, there have been 108 overdose deaths reported so far (but keep in mind the six month investigation lapse– 108 only reflects the deaths from January of this year).
Drug overdoses are the leading cause of injury-related death in Ohio with fentanyl and carfentanil related ODs on the rise.
