Big chunk of change going to improving cops’ body cameras

The City of Columbus is spending nearly $1.5 million on a revamp for the police department’s body cams. The new storage system will be easier to use and less likely to lose data.

This comes after recent reports revealed roughly 100,000 files of police cruiser video were accidentally deleted. Obviously, this raised a lot of concern so now they’re spending the big bucks to make sure it doesn’t happen anymore in Columbus.

As an extra measure of assurance, the camera footage from the new body cams will be stored in two different places.

Video containing no evidence of crime will be kept for 90 days while they’ll hang on to video with evidence for a bit more than two years and certain capital crime footage will be kept permanently.

Public access to videos will vary based on current policies and such.

Officers began wearing body cameras in December and 1,400 are expected to be adorn in them over the next three years.
