#Eat614: Good ol’ home cookin’ in the Old North

Old North is like campus and Clintonville’s cousin that did alright in high school, lost its way in early adulthood, but is finally hitting its stride. With all of it’s charmed staples like Dick’s Den and Bossy Grrls plus Used Kids Records, Evolved, and a handful of other new establishments that either relocated or opened in the SoHud-ish neighborhood, it’s quickly becoming the happenin’ spot.

The area isn’t flashy, it’s just trying to be it’s own humble self. The brunch spots up there are attempting to achieve a similar down-to-earth, early afternoon goal.

Baba’s Homemade food prepared right before your eyes in a tastefully decorated cafe. Baba’s is a new ventured owned by a husband, wife duo. They source meats, veggies, and bakery items locally and their Thunderkiss pourover is to die for. Best practice: chorizo b-fast sandwich and a snickerdoodle cookie.

Jack & benny’s When you’re just not trying to come up with a cute outfit that also doesn’t look like you’re trying too hard, this is THE old familiar spot. Stick with the sweats and toothpaste-covered T and head to Jack & Benny’s. Snag a glass of their fresh-squeezed OJ to get your blood sugar levels back on track and some eggs + toast + sausage links to mingle with your belly full of Big Vic.

Nancy’s home cooking If you’re up for some old fashioned food paired with friendly banter, Nancy’s is the pick. We have it on good authority that if you’re super nice to the service, your pancakes may come out looking like Mickey Mouse. The place is long, narrow and scarlet and grey themed.. Just like any good diner would be.
