Grades are in: Cbus near bottom of class in small biz friendliness

Columbus comes in at top of the class in some areas but when it comes to showing support for its small businesses, it hardly even passes.

Thumbtack, a business app and website, released a report that gave a grade to cities based on how its entrepreneurs rated the city’s friendliness towards small businesses.

Columbus’ small business owners aren’t really feeling the love as their testimonials landed Columbus a C-. That puts us 66 out of 80 cities this year compared to 25 out of 50 last year.

“The small business owners we heard from in Columbus were 5% less positive about their city’s support for small businesses than the national average, leading to their C- grade overall,” said Thumbtack Economist Lucas Puente, PhD. “And compared to nearby cities, such as Cincinnati (B+) and Cleveland (B+), Columbus scored lower.”

The study looked at other criteria including employment, labor & hiring, ease of starting a business, tax codes, and training & networking programs. In all those areas, Columbus received a B+ or higher but it was in other areas like zoning, governmental websites, and ease of hiring that brought our overall grade down.
