Moves made to turn I-670 shoulder into full-on lane

The left shoulder of most freeways are used for emergency stopping. But Ohio’s Controlling Board wants to use I-670’s shoulder for regular traffic flow. The idea is to alleviate congestion during rush hour. $7 million has been approved for this project and that’s only to pay for the engineering consultants. The state is planning to spend another $51 million on the actual construction.

Smoother traffic before and after working hours sounds great but this plan is being met with serious resistance.

Senator Charleta B. Tavares of Columbus think the idea is dangerous. The right lane may be widened to accommodate disabled vehicles but that’s not set in stone.
