Senate Proposes Late Start to School Year
Ohio Sen. Gayle Manning, serving the 13th district has proposed a new bill to the Ohio legislature that could push the start of school all the way past Labor Day.
“I was inspired by the families in my district,” Sen. Manning said.
One of the reasons for the legislation, according to Manning, is the fluctuating temperature in August, which can get to the mid 90’s.
Senate Bill 34 includes an option for families that wish to bypass the Labor Day time frame. The language allows for public input 30 days prior to setting the school calendar so that they can override the late Labor Day start and begin in August.
If passed this law goes would begin in the 2018-19 school year, starting on Sept. 3rd 2018 which would be nearly a week and a half later than usual.
