Dolls for a Cause: 9yo turns cans into companions for cancer patients

A 9-year-old in Clintonville is turning cans into companions for her peers with cancer.

Anna Patton, a fourth-grader at Indian Springs Elementary School, has donated 22 American Girl dolls to Nationwide Children’s patients during the past two Christmases, reports Th Dispatch.

None of the dolls have hair.

“I wanted the dolls to look like them,” she told The Dispatch.

Anna’s mission is inspired by her great-aunt who was diagnosed with cancer in 2015.

She cut her long hair to donate it to Wigs but Kids in honor of her aunt who sadly died several months later.

Then, upon flipping through an American Girl doll magazine for any potential additions to her collections, she discovered the company’s “Truly Me” line which allows customers to customize the toys.

Anna thought the dolls in their bald states would make perfect gifts for NWCH patients.

Thus began her collection of cans and scrap metal.

Anna’s mother, Joanna Serio, told The Dispatch her daughter quietly saved the earnings until she cashed it in for four dolls—$115 each.

When Anna’s story reached social media, donations started flooding in.

Motivated to raise even more money, she began hand making crafts to sell at community events.

As the Christmas season quickly approaches Anna will be busy getting a new friend into the hands of cancer patients.
