This year’s Governor’s Awards artist, Carol Stewart, puts a splash of sunshine in her paintings because she believes that a still life does not have to be still.

I’m interested in creating movement,” she said.

Drawing inspiration from artists like Henri Matisse, Stewart collects the items that appear in her paintings from flea markets, online stores, and ceramicists. Stewart’s color palette is influenced by these finds, as well as fresh flowers purchased from local stores or cut from her own garden.

As the 2018 Governor’s Award artist, Stewart has created nine pieces of art specifically for the winners who will be honored at the annual Arts Day & Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio luncheon and awards ceremony on May 16 at the Columbus Athenaeum.

It was something I never thought of for myself,” she said of being chosen to create the awards. “It’s a huge honor.”

The Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio is a statewide program that showcases and celebrates Ohio artists, arts organizations, arts patrons, and business support of the arts. For more information and to register for the event, visit: oac.ohio.gov/governorsawards.
