Hilltop Rising: Non-profits strengthens neighborhood through art

Seventy years ago on a piece of rolling farmland just west of downtown Columbus, General Motors set up shop and provided a stable, comfortable life for thousands of workers. Five decades later, all that remains is vacant, fenced off land and a struggling community.

Summer Jam West is a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening Hilltop through music and art. Each year, Summer Jam West installs major, public art in the neighborhood. This year, the organization is proud to present “Hilltop Rising.”

“The Phoenix represents being born anew, out of the ashes; how we as a community are growing towards becoming vibrant once more,” wrote Summer Jam West on Facebook.

Hollywood Casino has been a main catalyst for this latest sculpture by not only helping to fund the project but by also allowing it to be featured on their land.

Completion and installation of the new public art will take place in June ahead of the Summer Jam West music and arts festival on July 14 at Westgate Park.

“Summer Jam West also has a vision, an art movement that they foresee has the potential to bring about economic change and growth to the Hilltop,” wrote the organization.
