614Sports: Crew SC’s summer break from winning

Columbus Crew SC lost 2-nil against NYC FC in NYC this past Saturday night in the quintessential soccer palace known as Yankee Stadium, which is the Crew’s second consecutive loss.

The best chance for Columbus came midway through the second half when #9 Pedro Santos cut deep inside the right side of NYCFC’s box with a clear chance at goal; the problem was his extra touch allowed a NYC FC defender to recover for a goal-saving sliding deflection.

Then the game went from bad to worse for Columbus.

NYC FC’s #19 Jesús Medina scored the first goal in the 79th minute for a 1-nil lead that was doubled in the 90th minute with a goal by NYC FC’s #3 Anton Tinnerholm that slipped in the near post past Crew SC’s goalie #23 Zack Steffen, who had another off-night.

Crew SC’s #20 Eduardo Sosa made matters worse when he elbowed an opponent in the face that earned him a red card in the 93rd minute.

Columbus Crew SC (30 points) returns home to play Orlando City SC (22 points) at MAPFRE Stadium this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Clippers Ready to Host a Week-Long Pig Roast

The bats have been swinging hard and making contact for the Columbus Clippers, resulting in a win streak since hosting the Triple-A All-Star festivities last week.

On that note, Clippers catcher #13 Eric Haase hit a grand slam over the weekend in the road series against the Louisville Bats.

A four-game winning streak—all road wins against the sinking Louisville Bats—was precisely what the Clippers needed as they welcome the International League-leading Lehigh Valley IronPigs for a 3-game series starting tonight.

The first game between the Columbus Clippers (49-43) and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (55-37) is tonight at Huntington Park with the first pitch at 7:05 p.m.
