“Twisted, dark romance for the ages” Macbeth opens this weekend in Schiller Park

[su_testimonial]By Scott Vezdos, Director of Marketing of Actors’ Theatre of Columbus[/su_testimonial]

Bogie and Bacall. Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Beatrice and Benedick. Like these famous couples, Lord and Lady Macbeth are the epitome of passion and love.

Macbeth is one of William Shakespeare’s most famous and enduringly popular plays, a twisted, dark romance for the ages. Macbeth has been a smash hit since it premiered in 1606, as it delves into love, murder, parenthood and the occult with its intricate, snappy dialogue and epic battles turned intensely personal.

We as human persons are continually fascinated with the unseemly underbelly of our neighbors, from the daily news to our eager revulsion with any unusual murder.

In a number of ways, this play is an extended examination of the drives that push all of us to become our worser selves, and the question of whether we enter wickedness from circumstances beyond our control, or whether we had the key to evil with us all along.

Directed by Philip J. Hickman, Actors’ Theatre of Columbus will open its 2018 season, “Monsters & Men,” with Shakespeare’s classic drama from May 24 June 17 at Schiller Park Amphitheatre.

ATC’s Macbeth will feature Dan Burleson in the titular role, and Amanda Phillips as Lady Macbeth.

Macbeth deals with complicated themes of power, masculinity, fragility, conspiracy, and spirituality; and yet it is a roller-coaster love story, wickedly funny, full to the brim with horror-movie dread and heroic triumph,” shared Hickman. “Macbeth is the precursor to summer blockbuster movies, full of sound and fury, signifying – quite a lot, actually.”

ATC’s outdoor summer shows at Schiller Park are free and open to the public, though donations are encouraged and vital to the continued success of Actors’ Theatre.
