You don’t look a day over 39: Cultural Arts Center celebrates milestone

[su_testimonial]By Nancy Colvin, Communications and Marketing Specialist, Columbus Recreation and Parks Department[/su_testimonial]

Forty years ago, the red brick building situated at the corner of Main and 2nd Streets was reinvented. What started out as one of the first Ohio State Arsenals took on a new life at the creative heart of Columbus.

Looms and easels replaced armaments and a small band of talented and dedicated artists began working and teaching behind the wrought iron gates of the Cultural Arts Center.

From ceramics to jewelry making, stone carving to painting, the Center has grown to meet the needs and interests of its students.

Countless folks have made their first pinch pot in one of CAC’s ceramics classes or been introduced to talented artists who help Columbus thrive in one of the Center’s thought-provoking exhibitions.

This summer, CAC is celebrating its 40th anniversary by showcasing those artists, both students and teachers, who’ve called the Center home.

On view through June 16, Centered 2018, Pt. 1 features works by CAC faculty and staff. Vibrant paintings line the walls of the gallery, including one of Dora Rosenfeld, the Center’s first director and strategically placed pedestals showcase ceramics and glittering jewelry from longtime staff members.

And, beginning June 22, CAC’s students take over the gallery with a show highlighting their work.

Admission to the exhibition is free. For more details, visit culturalartscenteronline.org.

The Cultural Arts Center is located at 139 West Main Street, Columbus, 43215.
