City Council to rethink tax abatement program

Columbus City Council is looking to evaluate the tax incentive program tonight.

According to WOSU, Columbus offers tax abatements to companies in exchange for meeting hiring benchmarks and while a majority of the 65 agreements the city has with business are meeting or exceeding their requirements, there are still some that don’t hold up their end of the deal.

Council member Michael Stinziano told WOSU the program is still creating jobs and increasing neighborhoods’ viabilities, though.

In total, City Council found tax-abated companies created almost 2,800 jobs and more than $200 million in annual payroll.

Tonight, City Council will decide whether or not to dissolve tax abatement agreements with two companies: The Fireproof Partners and Tower 10.
