Food Truck Friday: Affordable, authentic Mexican + bar games at Pins

Welcome to Food Truck Friday, where, believe it or not, we give you the skinny about a great food truck that regularly sets up camp at a cool location.

Columbus is far from lacking in the mobile grub department but sometime we need a little direction outside of the ol’ standby Thursday Food Trucks at the Commons.

And other times you need your truck food paired with an ice cold adult beverage.

This entry will be active, delicious, and fun as we check out Taquitos Truck at Pins Mechanical Co.’s downtown location.

Taquitos Truck

Sometimes less is more and this is definitely one of those times. Taquitos offers a concise and delicious Mexican street food menu consisting of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas and nachos.

I firmly believe that’s all you need.

On my recent visit, I chose the carne asada tacos and guacamole and chips.

The tacos were piping hot and consisted of seared and juicy steak, onions and cilantro and came accompanied with hot or mild sauces (I have bad manners and asked for both) and a lime for spraying.

My advice? Go with the mild and utilize your lime and if no one is looking, place a second order – it’s worth another $8.

The guacamole was smoky and creamy with the perfect ratio of garlic and cilantro and came with fresh and crunchy chips. Be warned, the guacamole and chips is enough for three people and is a tremendous bargain at only $6.

Taquitos had quite the crowd for a Thursday night and people around me mainly ordered tacos and chips, with a few people ordering large and hearty burritos.

If you are in the mood for inexpensive and delicious Mexican street food while chilling on a patio, Taquitos at Pins Mechanical Co is a great way to spend your Tuesday, Saturday or Sunday evening.

If you have never been, let me give you a quick breakdown. Pins is like an adult version of Chuck E. Cheese, but instead of terrifying animatronic bands, you are treated to giant versions of Jenga and Beer Pong, an army of pinball machines and most importantly – duck bowling. Sounds like no fun, right?

Oh yeah…Pins has a pretty impressive draft beer selection (36 taps) to accompany a creative cocktail list. I didn’t want to be rude to the bar staff, so I ordered one of each.

Because it was national Tequila day, I went with the Tequila Summer – a bare boned but refreshing drink consisting of tequila and watermelon juice and garnished with a cucumber slice. The sweetness of the drink complimented the saltiness of the carne asada perfectly and I would certainly recommended this pairing.

My draft of choice? A Miller Light draft. Sue me…I had to drive back to the burbs, was in a low key mood and was looking for a light lager to accompany my chips. And you know what? I made the right decision. If you don’t like Miller Lite with your chips and guacamole, I don’t think you are a happy person and you probably shouldn’t go to Pins and bum everyone out.

Pins is a great location for a first date, to get the gang together and to have an awesome Taco Tuesday. What are you waiting for? Get out there and support local, just don’t throw a fit when you knock over the Jenga blocks.
