Toxic relationship inspires CCAD student’s clothing line

There are no mistakes, only lessons learned. That’s especially true for one Columbus College of Art and Design student.

Marissa Holt is a junior fashion design major at CCAD who just recently gave life to a new collection of flare skirts inspired by her emotionally abusive ex-boyfriend. In the relationship, her boyfriend would try controlling what she wore to deter attraction from other men.

“The Yours Truly collection is me telling women it’s okay to wear whatever you want, and that nobody owns you,” says Holt.

“I put tulle on the outside of the skirt and on the inside because he always told me that women shouldn’t wear see through fabrics. I added the faux flowers because for me flowers represent growth and blossoming after a bad relationship,” she says.

She chose her models to reflect the freedom women have to present themselves any way they choose.

“The models have different hair colors, and there’s even one with tattoos on her legs because I believe a woman should be able to wear and do whatever she pleases with her body.”

Holt is now taking orders and is donating all proceeds to the Hope House for battered women.
