Where to find majestic national birds nesting near you

Bald eagles are the symbol of this country and you don’t have to travel far to catch a glimpse of their majesty.

A eagle’s nest has been spotted in a grove of trees near the Scioto River along Dublin Road between Twin Rivers Drive and Grandview Avenue. Modo Yoga Columbus and Camp Bow Wow Columbus- Grandview are both in close proximity.

We are nearing the end of mating season which means baby eagles are likely to hatch soon. It’s very important to respect the birds’ privacy and keep a safe distance from the nest to spectate—we suggest staying across the road from the grove of trees where the nest can be seen.

Here are some interesting facts about the nesting patterns of bald eagles courtesy of learner.org:

• Bald eagle’s large nest is called an aerie. A typical nest will range from 1.8 to 3 meters (6-10 feet) in diameter and about 1.8 to 3 meters (6 to 10 feet) high. The nest cavity, where the eggs are laid, will be about 30 to 40 centimeters (12 to 16 inches) in diameter and about 10 centimeters (4 inches) deep.
• Bald eagles are very territorial birds, and most breeding pairs return to the same nest site year after year. They may use the same nest annually for as many as 35 years, or they may build additional nests in their nesting territory, and alternate the use of them from year to year.
• Nest sites typically include at least one perch with a clear view of the water, where they forage.
• Eagle nests are constructed with large sticks, and may be lined with moss, grass, plant stalks, lichens, seaweed, or sod. They are typically built near rivers or lakes that offer areas of shallow water for feeding and drinking.
