New meadery opening soon, another in queue

Brothers Drake Meadery will soon have some competition.

Just in time for National Mead Day, locally-owned Uprising Meadworks on the East Side will open its doors on August 3, offering guests a wide favorite of hand-crafted meads.

Uprising Meadworks will be located at 687 N James Rd adjacent to Actual Brewing.

FYI: Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey with water, sometimes with various fruits, spices, grains, or hops. It sort of tastes like wine but with a bit of a twist depending on the blend.

But don’t expect it to be super sweet; Uprising’s meads range from semi-sweet to semi-dry, in flavors like ginger lime and lemon cherry, according to a release.

“Mead is a designer drink” says Rhone, “It can stand alone or incorporate fruits, spices, even vegetables.”

There will be a taproom open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings starting at 4pm, and Saturdays starting at 2pm.

They’ll also offer bottles for sale in the taproom, online, and in select stores.

“We’ve worked to make this a welcoming place for everyone, we want our customers to feel like friends from the moment they come in,” says principal owner Jennifer Ganoe. “Columbus has long been our home, and the local and craft movement is such a wonderful development here, we’re happy to contribute to the diversity of options available for people.”

In other mead news, Zen Bee Meadery is nearing completion on their taproom at 7472 Reliance St. in Worthington Village.

Currently, their mead is only carried at Kindred Brewery over in Gahanna.

Zen Bee won first place in the mead home brewing competition at the Ohio State Fair in 2017.
