6 venue alternatives to Mapfre Stadium Rock on the Range

As 614now reported last week, Rock on the Metro Park will not be a thing.

Columbus Metro Parks put their boot down against using the rock/metal festival using Three Creeks as a venue, saying in an Instagram post, “While generally being supportive of such events within our community, Metro Parks does not believe that hosting such an event within one of the Metro Parks is consistent with our mission (“to conserve open spaces, while providing places and opportunities that encourage people to discover and experience nature”).”

So with that idea out the window, festival organizers are back on the prowl for a location to satisfy the festival’s size and various needs (hotels, parking, water supply) amidst the continuing drama surrounding the Columbus Crew SC relocating to Austin, TX.

The Dispatch obtained email exchanges between Greg Davies, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther’s chief of staff, sent to Jeff Polesovsky, the Columbus Partnership’s vice president of public policy, listing a few possible options for Rock on the Range:

  • Mapfre Stadium, which Davies said “remains the best option, particularly if the state invests in the lands around the state-owned stadium and controls the site.″
  • Cooper Stadium, the home of the Columbus Clippers through 2008: “It would be great to reuse a blighted site, but the costs and site control will be next to insurmountable.”
  • Berliner Park on the South Side
  • The closed Phoenix Golf Links in Grove City; the site is owned by the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio.
  • Bolton Field in southwest Franklin County
  • Eldorado Scioto Downs on the South Side
  • The closed Westland Mall site on the West Side.

What do you think of these suggestions for Rock on the Range? Do you have another, better place in mind?
