Columbus Zoo welcomes healthy baby elephant
BIG delivery at the Columbus Zoo this morning!
Mama Phoebe gave birth to a happy, healthy calf at 3:09 am.
The newborn’s sex has yet to be determined, as the animal care team is giving time for mom and baby to bond.
“Both are doing great and the calf appears strong!” wrote Columbus Zoo on Facebook.
But, once the sex is determined the public will have an opportunity to name the baby! Details to come soon.

Phoebe was artificially inseminated with sperm from Columbus elephant Hank and a male from another zoo, so the father of the calf is not yet known.
This calf’s birth is important to sustaining the genetic diversity of the endangered animal.
Currently, the calf and mom are in a behind-the-scenes area and are not yet visible by Zoo guests.
