As animal care team, herd, and community mourn the loss of the three-week-old elephant, the Zoo has decided to honor her life with a name.
Prior to her passing, the Zoo announced a naming opportunity and received over 44,000 votes.
The overwhelming favorite was Ellie.
“We will always remember how Ellie touched our lives and inspired us to continue our support for and work on behalf of elephants globally,” wrote Columbus Zoo on Facebook.
The Zoo added that the sudden death of Ellie is in no way related to the three giraffes that died in the past six weeks.
Yesterday, Vice President of Animal Health, Dr. Randy Junge, went live on Facebook to answer some questions about the loss of Ellie.
