Can hellish Short North parking be eradicated with these 2 new initiatives?

Short North executives are attempting to lure customers back to the popular but crowded neighborhood with two different parking discounts.

Will it work?

The parking problem in the Short North is undeniable—especially during all the streetscape construction—but the Short North Alliance is hoping that by allowing discounted spots in parking garages and offering Lyft codes, customers will begin to migrate back.

Columbus Business First reports the organization is working with three different parking garages near High Street to pilot a $1 for an hour system to encourage people to shop at local businesses. This program is modeled after North Market’s one-hour parking validation.

The Short North Alliance is also teaming up with Lyft to to offer $5 off the ride-sharing service to and from the Short North for the first 5,000 people.

Additionally, customers who use Lyft to get to the neighborhood will qualify for a 10 percent discount of purchases made at participating businesses from April 9 through October 31.

Lyft is footing the bill for this initiative while Smart Columbus is helping get it off the ground.

If the discounted parking and Lyft rides are successful, they will be made permanent.

So what do you think, will these initiatives eradicate the parking congestion and rejuvenate the Short North?

As part of the Columbus Division of Parking Service's commitment to continually review the Short North parking plan’s performance and making improvements accordingly, hourly rates in some areas will be changing.

Effective Oct. 7, rates in the mobile pay only zones will decrease or increase by 25 cents to 50 cents per hour from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM based on a zone’s average on-street parking occupancy data.

The specific 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM changes by zone can be viewed on the Mobile Pay Only Zone Rate Change Map at columbus.gov.

Hourly rates at all Short North parking meters will remain unchanged at $1 per hour from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and $2 per hour from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

“This latest update reflects our continual evaluation of data and community feedback to optimize parking accessibility and efficiency in the Short North,” said Robert Ferrin, Assistant Director of Parking Services. “We want to continue to be responsive to the community by appropriately setting rates so parking is available for the arts district’s residents and their guests, businesses and visitors.”

According to a Department of Public Service release, the Short North parking plan’s overall compliance rate is averaging 85%.

Just weeks after the manufacturing and sale of CBD products became legal in Ohio, Columbus' premier spa had adopted the natural remedy to offer new experiences for the local community.

PENZONE Salons + Spas and Seventh Sense Botanical Therapy have partnered up to offer self care products infused with CBD. This is the first and only salon and spa in Columbus to offer such goods.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is an active ingredient in cannabis derived from the hemp plant touted for its therapeutic effect on conditions like pain, insomnia, and anxiety. CBD products can contain just .3% THC under Ohio law.

According to a release, Seventh Sense products are crafted with high-quality botanicals and CBD to create a full self-care routine that lets the customer reach new levels of wellness.

Among the products are eye cream, facial moisturizer, face oil, lip balm, muscle balms, foot cream, and bath bombs. They will be offered at all PENZONE locations and LIT Life + Yoga.

PENZONE was recently named Salon of the Year at the North American Hairstyling Awards—not a bad 50th anniversary present. Click here to read more about the salon.
