City of Cbus dropping taxpayer stack on smart car fleet

Move over gas-guzzlers, electric cars are coming to central Ohio—93 to be exact.

Columbus will make its first major investment in smart technology to reduce carbon emissions and increase mobility. The “practical path to replace carbon-based fuel consumption” includes a lease-to-own deal on 93 electric vehicles for police, firefighters, code enforcement, and facilities management, and an addition of 86 new charging stations around the city.

The overall cost of the initiative comes to a total of 2 million dollars derived mostly from taxpayers as well as the Smarter Cities Challenge winnings—$1.7 million and $273,000 respectively.
