The Ohio State University, The Transportation Research Center, and the state of Ohio have officially and literally begun paving the way to the world’s largest autonomous vehicle testing facility.

It’s located about an hour northwest of Columbus in East Liberty.

The Dispatch reports the center will consist of roadways and structures meant to mimic all different kinds of roadways to give researchers and developers access to as many variables that an autonomous car would face out in the real world.

The first portion—a high-speed intersection—of the $45 million, 540-acre Smart Center will be open by the end of this year.

“There is absolutely no better state in the nation for automotive tech than Ohio,” Governor John Kasich wrote on Twitter.

The Dispatch reports Kasich saying that autonomous cars are one thing that will put Columbus on the map.
