Golf Season in Central Ohio is finally here, with the Memorial Tournament Presented by Nationwide right around the corner (May 30–Jun 2). Columbus and it’s surrounding areas are known for some great golf courses, as four are nationally ranked.

We know all about the Muirfields and Sciotos of the area, but what about the public golf courses? Whether you are looking for a new place to play this summer, in town for the Memorial Tournament, or new to the game, here are the top five public golf courses in Central Ohio.

The Virtues | One Long Dr, Nashport, OH
Located just 10 miles east of Newark, this gem is ranked as the top public golf course in all of Ohio, and one of the 100 best in the United States. Formerly known as Longaberger, The Virtues offers a challenging, yet fun test of golf with great views on top of several elevated tee boxes. Holes No.4, No.8 and No.18 are commonly thought of as some of the best holes in Central Ohio. The club certainly gives off a private-feel with its immaculate greens, service and 60,000 square-foot clubhouse.

Cooks Creek | 16405 US-23, South Bloomfield, OH
This fantastic layout along the Scioto River and Walnut Creek sits under 30 minutes south of Columbus. Cooks Creek, formerly known as Raintree South, was co-designed by PGA Tour Golfer and Ohio State alum John Cook. The course is challenging for golfers at all levels but is certainly playable due to it’s forgiving fairways. Get a foursome together and you can play for just $25 a person.

Golf Club of Dublin | 5805 Eiterman Rd, Dublin, OH
This “links-style” club will leave you feeling like you are in Dublin, Ireland, instead of Dublin, Ohio. Pot bunkers, massive fairways and greens, nothing to block the wind, and tall fescue are just a few features that give the Golf Club of Dublin its European feel. Although there are water hazards on 17 of 18 holes, the course is extremely playable for golfers of all skill-levels.

Cumberland Trail | 8244 Columbia Rd SW, Pataskala, OH
Like the previous two courses, Cumberland Trail Golf Club is designed by Michael Hurdzan & Dana Fry. This layout is a bit like Golf Club of Dublin with its wide fairways, large green complexes, 10 water hazards and penal fescue. Several improvements have been made to the club over the past few years, as it now features exceptional green surfaces and a redesigned clubhouse.

Darby Creek | 19300 Orchard Rd, Marysville, OH
Just 15 minutes outside of Dublin, Darby Creek is as fun of a golf course as you can find for under $40. One of the best aspects of the course is its two unique nines, with the front-nine being named “Links” and the back-nine “Woods”. Darby Creek uses its location in the Union County countryside to set up a multitude of wind-swept Scottish style holes on the front side, and a tree-lined back-nine that sits on an old sugar-campsite, due to its many maple trees. The course has been great for local junior golfers, hosting a dozen-or-so tournaments throughout the year.
