86’ed parking: Short North employees facing $260 permit cost

Amid all the changes to Short North parking, service industry employees are discovering that going to the neighborhood to make money may cost them even more.

NBC4i spoke with a couple of Short North bartenders who said they’re looking at spending as much as $260 a month to simply park for their shifts.

And even then, cars still need to be moved every 3 hours which poses a great inconvenience for busy bartenders and servers.

Columbus Assistant Director for Parking Services Robert Ferrin understands these are unfortunate circumstances, but there are options like COTA, permits purchased by employers (up to 10), and parking garages.

However, the bartenders NBC4i spoke with questioned the safety of the last options, saying that leaving their place of employment with cash tips makes them targets.

The new parking plan was rolled out earlier this week. Read more about it here.

For the next couple weeks, parking enforcement will be issuing warning tickets for violations.
