Short North art supply pop-up paints possible future in Franklinton

While the Blick Art Materials location on N. High Street is set to close on March 9, the company seems committed to continuing to service its artistic community in Columbus’ downtown.

Thanks to the all-consuming cycle of gentrification that has swept through the Short North in an almost parodic fashion, the store that supplied area artists for 17 years was forced to call it quits, citing challenges associated with parking, construction, and “changes in development of the Short North” according to a recent Instagram post.

But all is not lost, Blick fans. As the area surrounding 400 W. Rich street in Franklinton continues to cement itself as the city’s new creative hub, the art supplier has planned a series of pop-ups to help fill the void left by the closure of the Short North location.

With the first of these pop-ups slated for Sunday, February 24 at 400 W. Rich, posts from Blick employees on Facebook suggest that future opportunities to keep the art supplier in the community are contingent on the success of this initial outing.

If you’d like to see Blick stick around downtown in some form, get out and vote with your dollars this Sunday. Otherwise, you can always hit up the Sawmill Road location, which plans to continue operation as usual.

The Short North location of Blick will be the only one affected by the closure.
