Endless Summer: Update on Woodlands Backyard volleyball dome

614now Staff

Published

on

About two years ago, year-around sand volleyball at Woodlands Backyard was but a conversation. Today, we're seeing a little less talk and a lot more action.

The rec bar has announced that they are in the midst of construction an all-seasons dome where volleyballers can bump, set, and spike in subzero temperatures. No matter if we're dealt another Polar Vortex this winter, the Woodlands Backyard dome will be kept at a balmy 72 degrees.

The dome will consist of six courts. Play is expected to begin in November, though the grand opening date has yet to be announced. The second session of indoor sand volleyball is scheduled for January 6.

League registration begins Friday, October 18.

We know this development has been a long time coming, so for those skeptics, Woodlands promises that if the dome falls though, "we will refund you and then go go crawl under a rock and never come out."

Covering many vibrant communities across central Ohio, the 614 is so much more than just Columbus. Welcome to the ‘Burb Breakdown, an ongoing series highlighting the unique character of neighborhoods from across this sprawling metro area we call home. Today, we take a look at everything there is to enjoy in Powell this Fall.

Perhaps best known as home to the world-renowned Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, the City of Powell is worthy of a visit in its own right. From world class golf courses to a historic downtown, it's easy to see why this picturesque suburb is a hit with locals and visitors alike.

Experience Powell for yourself this fall to see what makes this community so special. Here are five ideas to get you on your way!

1. Autumn Community Bonfire | October 19, 6:00-8:00 pm | Village Green Park

The Powell Police Department and Liberty Township Fire Department partner to host this the annual bonfire at the lovely Village Green Park, located at 47 Hall Street in Powell. Come out and celebrate the season with free hot dogs, apple cider, doughnut holes, and marshmallows to roast over an open fire.

2. Candy by the Carload | October 26, 4:00-6:00 pm | City of Powell Municipal Building

Powell's annual Candy by the Carload event transforms the municipal Building's parking lot into a treasure chest for trick-or-treaters! In this family-friendly event, local businesses, and organizations set up booths and car trunks filled with candy, toys and other Halloween goodies for kids to enjoy.

3. Noctober Fest @ Nocterra Brewing Co. | October 26, 12:00 pm-12:00 am | 41 Depot Street

For the more adult fall-time tastes, there's Noctoberfest, a ticketed event for ages 21 and up hosted by Powell's own Nocterra Brewing. This outdoor celebration of all things Autumn will feature live music, food trucks, contests, and the release of Nocterra's seasonal creation, Festbier!

Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door for this rain-or-shine celebration. For more info, check out the Facebook event page.

4. Trick-or-Treat | October 31, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Some young ghouls and goblins prefer to get their candy the good old fashioned way. For these, there's the city of Powell's Trick-or-Treat. What will your youngster dress up as this year? For a very Powell-centric look, throw on some khaki and masquerade as the Columbus Zoo's own "Jungle" Jack Hanna! Add a gorilla suit or two for the parents and hit those sidewalks.

5. Downtown Powell Sip & Stroll | November 21, 5:00-8:00 pm

Looking for the perfect girl’s night out? Need an original date night idea? Want to kick off the holiday shopping season in style? The shops of Downtown Powell have just the thing, thanks to the Sip and Stroll event. Best of all, all participating retailers will have light snacks and/or beverages for you to try while getting some much needed retail therapy.
