Let’s Do Lunch: Fresh, hot gyros and fries at Greek Express

Aaron Wetli

Welcome to Let’s Do Lunch, a column where we scour the 614 for lunches that are quick, inexpensive, and delicious. Our goal is to get in, eat, and get out in under 30 minutes and spend around $10. You work hard for your money, your time is precious, and life is too short to eat leftovers every day in your cubicle. Let’s get started.

Who doesn’t like gyros, hummus, and fries? Greek Express offers quick, convenient, and inexpensive Greek and Mediterranean fare in all five Central Ohio locations.

Let’s start with the gyros: coming in small, medium, and large with choices of gyro, chicken, steak, veggie or falafel, these piping hot treats are always fresh and range in price from $3.49 to $7.49. My advice? At lunch, don’t go any bigger than a medium, as you will almost be guaranteed to hit the delicious food coma wall around 2pm.

Of course, you can’t (or maybe you can if you have that “will power” stuff I keep reading about) have a gyro without fries, and Greek Express has some of the best in town. Perfectly seasoned in rich spices, these $3 steals are made to order, come piping hot, and are great to split with a coworker.

Looking for something healthier? Greek Express has you covered with a bevy of salad choices. My go-to is the Chicken Greek Salad. Fresh lettuce, grilled and sliced chicken breast, cucumbers, tomatoes, banana peppers, feta cheese, and olives come together and are topped with your choice of house dressing, tzatziti sauce, or Greek Vinaigrette dressing.

Of course, I would be remiss without mentioning the Hummus Dip, Spicy Feta Dip, Red Pepper Dip, Tzatziki dip. All are rich and hearty and perfect as a snack in the office or to take home for dinner later that evening.

There are delicious items that break our $10-ish dollar limit, too, such as the succulent Lamb Chops ($16.99) and Beef and Chicken Kabobs (both $13.49). If that is in your lunch budget and you have a big appetite, go on and live large, friend.

Finally, if you are going to take something back to your boss for dessert, any of the four flavors of baklava will work. These flaky, sweet, and crunchy desserts are the perfect single serving size, and will compliment any sweet tooth. Maybe, you should just eat it yourself.

Greek Express is open for lunch daily and has locations is Grandview, Clintonville, Gahanna, Polaris, and Powell. For more information, visit greekexpressfamily.com.
