On a cloud: The Florentine returns to Columbus as cloud kitchen and other restaurant news

The Florentine returns

For over seven decades, the Florentine served up Italian favorites just west of downtown before it closed its doors—seemingly for good—in December of 2016.

Now, nearly four years later, third generation owner Nick Penzone announced that the longtime favorite spot will be returning to Columbus later this month as a delivery and pickup only eatery. It will operate out of the CloudKitchens space at 1282 Essex Ave, which will serve as the restaurant’s pick-up spot for diners as well.

A cloud kitchen, also referred to as a ghost kitchen, allows restaurants to run limited operations out of a small commercial space (usually dedicated only to food preparation).

According to Penzone, the eatery aims to open next week, but they don’t have a firm date just yet. “RIght now we’re integrating our menus into the delivery apps, so we’re shooting for next week, but we’re definitely going to open sometime in December.”

The New Nile

Just over a year ago, The Nile Vegan first opened its doors at 1479 Worthington St., on the southern edge of the OSU campus.

And after only a year of patrons scooping up their food with injera (a spongy, East African flatbread), and selecting entrees from a voluminous menu, the vegan eatery has already opened a second location, at 1223 Goodale Ave. in Grandview, in October to rave reviews.

Rodos bringing European flair to Clintonville

Rodos European Grill is preparing to open in Clintonville, at 3369 Indianola Ave.

The restaurant, which also plans to offer an eclectic espresso bar, is billed as European street food with Mediterraian flair. The eatery’s menu features affordable gyro plates, paninis, and doner, in addition to several hearty entrees (like steak kebab and lamb chops) and even dessert options such as baklava and zupa.

Thurman Burgers expanding to Westerville area

The Thurman Cafe–with its hand-cut sloppy fries and massive (12-ounce) Thurman Burger overflowing with toppings–has been a German Village staple since 1942. Now the iconic eatery is set to open a third location, named Son of Thurman, at 31 Columbus St. in Galena. The first Son of Thurman location opened in Delaware, Ohio in 2013. Fourth generation Thurman Cafe owner Chris DeVol has called the area home for 16 years, and expressed optimism about its market potential.

“The area has seen incredible growth since I’ve been here, and there’s no sign of that slowing down at all,” DeVol said in a press release announcing the new Son of Thurman location. “One of the things that I really like about Galena is that it’s easier to get to than Polaris and other areas for so many people locally.”

And for fans of the Thurman burger, rest assured you’ll be able to find one here as well, as the menu for the Galena spot will mimic that of Thurman Cafe.

A Cameron Mitchell Christmas

If you’re after a full restaurant experience on Christmas Day, then Cameron Mitchell Restaurants have you covered. A pair of CMR eateries––The Guild House and The Barn at Rocky Fork––will both be open for dine-in patrons on Christmas Eve.

The Guild House, located at 624 N. High St., will be offering a three- course meal of soup or salad, an entree of either pan-seared grouper or bison steaks, and ricotta almond cake as dessert.

At the Barn, Christmastime diners can expect shrimp scampi followed by crab-crusted filet or seared scallops. The restaurant is even featuring a seasonal cocktail, a sparkling bourbon cider.
