Columbus City Schools to return to some in-person learning

Columbus City Schools on Tuesday revealed key dates for the district as they work to go from a fully remote educational model to a hybrid of online and in-person learning. 

“All of us have been looking forward to the day when our students and our employees could safely return to the classroom as part of our blended learning model,” said Superintendent and CEO Dr. Talisa Dixon. “I cannot wait to see our students’ faces – with masks on, of course – and to see them engaged in their classroom setting once again.” 

Students will be phased in depending on grade level, with Pre-K through third graders returning Oct. 19. After that, fourth and fifth graders resume classroom instruction Oct. 26, and sixth- through eighth graders follow on Nov. 2.

The blended learning plan calls for students to attend in-person classes two days each week and to learn remotely from home three days per week. 

In accordance with the district’s initial plans, high school students will continue with completely remote learning after the first quarter, with two exceptions: Career and Technical Education students at Columbus Downtown High School and the Fort Hayes Career Center will return on Oct. 19.

Teachers in the district will return by Oct. 14 to prepare their classrooms, and they are receiving additional COVID-19 prevention training. 

“We know that families and staff will have questions about the implementation of our blended learning plans,” Dixon said. “Beginning the week of October 5, we will provide the CCS community with regular updates on various facets of the blended learning plan, including schedules, health, and safety protocols, which will include everyone wearing a mask while in our CCS buildings, FAQs, and more.”
