Study shows Columbus residents at highest risk for this “white collar” crime

From pot holes to parking spots, you may think you have plenty to be concerned about as a Columbus resident. Unfortunately, we’re about to give you one more.

According to a report from law corporation Summit Defense, Columbus saw the highest number of identity theft crimes per 10,000 people with 367.89 in 2018. Coming in second place with less than half as many identity theft cases was San Francisco with 138.67.

Additionally, Columbus had the highest rate of forgery crimes per 10,000 people with 43.86.

Summit Defense collected 2018 data from the U.S. Treasury to determine the number of white-collar crimes that occurred in the 100 largest cities around the U.S., relative to the city’s population.

The FBI characterizes white-collar crime as crimes committed by business and government professionals to obtain money, property, services, or a personal or business advantage.
