Jack McLaughlin

A Columbus Crew player was robbed and assaulted by a group of men in the Short North last week, and the high-profile incident is shedding light on questions of safety in the area.

According to Columbus Police, Columbus Crew midfielder Derrick Etienne was the victim of an aggravated robbery just before 11 p.m. on March 17.

After giving the group $100 through CashApp, Etienne attempted to walk away, but was surrounded by the men. They group then started to attack Etienne, stealing his Apple Watch and a gold chain.

This is the latest incident in a string of violent crimes that have come to the Short North within the last year.

Multiple drive-by shootings occurred in the area last summer, including a Sept. 6 shooting that left one hospitalized, and a late July drive-by shooting outside of Skully’s Music-Diner.

These events in part led to the creation of the Short North Crime Interdiction Program–a joint effort between the Columbus Police Department and the Short North Alliance–which increased the number of police patrols in the area.
