Maxwell Williams, a 24 year old data engineer, was simply enjoying an evening out with friends Monday night, listening to jazz music at the popular campus-area bar Dick’s Den, when his life changed in an instant.

A stray bullet from a shooting outside traveled through a pane of glass and struck him him in the back.

Now, according to a GoFundMe page and several social media updates, Williams is paralyzed. “The bullet lodged into his back, severing the spinal cord. Maxwell and his family are now facing the jarring reality of paralysis from the waist down,” the statement reads.

A GoFundMe page for Williams is asking for donations to help pay for medical expenses, and it appears the Columbus community is already stepping up to the plate.

The fundraiser, which was created just one day ago, has already raised over $116,000 of the $125,000 goal, which cites “a long road ahead of him with many unknowns and medical expenses.”

Maxwell’s campaign is still active; you can donate to support him here.
