One dead after car falls 50 feet into Columbus quarry

A man has died after driving his car into a quarry on the West Side of Columbus.

Just before 3 a.m. this morning, a car traveled at a high rate of speed through the intersection of 5th Avenue and McKinley Avenue before crashing into a fence and plunging into the adjacent quarry.

The vehicle landed in several feet of water after falling approximately 50 feet.

Emergency crews removed the driver from the vehicle, but he was declared dead at 3:50 a.m.

The driver’s identity has not been released.

As of this morning, the intersection remained closed as police worked to remove the vehicle from the quarry. It’s unclear exactly what led to the crash, but an investigation into its cause is underway.
