New legislation could bring food cart restrictions to the Short North

Late-night food carts in the Short North may be getting an earlier bedtime.

A proposal that would see all food carts in the area close by 2:30 a.m. will soon be considered by Columbus City Council.

The proposal originally listed 2 a.m. as closing time for vendors, but was later amended.

Yesterday, the Columbus City Council Public Safety Committee held a third and final hearing to review the potential legislation. The proposal is currently making its way through the city approval process. It will be on the docket for the Columbus City Council meeting on March 13, with a vote scheduled for March 20.

The proposal, with the extension of closures to 2:30 a.m., was deemed a “compromise” by City Council member Emmanuel Remy, who said it will give individuals a chance to purchase food before leaving the area for the night, while doing more to keep the Short North safe.
