Bring Your Own Board! Or broom.

For those attending the annual witches and warlock paddle this Saturday, October 19th, that’s exactly what they’ll need to bring.

Hosted by the Paddle Broads, a group of women who are “just having fun, trying something new, and getting off the couch,” Paddle Broads organizer, Chris Millard, first thought of this idea as a way to get out safely during COVID.

“We went every Friday morning and created a core group together,” she said. This core group consists of Millard, as well as Suzanne Klingelhofer, Deb Grayson, Cindy Benedict, Diane Paul, and Aura Fox.

They didn’t intend to start a “coven,” but now, dozens of women strap their paddle boards to their cars, put on a witch hat and cape, and join the coven once a year on the Scioto. Millard mentioned that during their annual event, everyone is in costume, and everyone is encouraging. “People definitely stop to take pictures of us,” said Millard.

This year will mark the event’s seventh year of the Annual Witches Paddle, inviting all ages to come dressed in their spell–casting gear and set out along the Scioto River.

The paddle will launch at 10 a.m. from the river by the Bicentennial Park Scioto Mile, with participating witches and warlocks having been asked to provide their own boards and paddles for the trip.

Currently, the event is still set to take place at its aforementioned date and time, however organizers listed October 20th, 12 p.m. as the rain date.

More information about the event can be found on the event’s Facebook.
