Central Ohio suburb unveils plans for a ‘Public Square’ with splash pad, ice rink, marketplace, plaza and more

As part of a Public Square development, a historic railroad depot was relocated, which will become the new home for a marketplace and event center.
After much anticipation, Plain City unveiled their plans for their new Public Square, using the 1880s railroad depot they purchased from the Fromm Family, then dismantled and shipped from Upper Arlington last June, as their ultimate inspiration for this new community space.
“A goal of staff and Council is to create unique gathering spaces in our Uptown district that complement our local businesses and landmarks of Plain City. I’m eager to see the addition of the Public Square project come to life and help round out our uptown amenities”, said Haley Lupton, Village Administrator, in a press release.

Situated at the corner of East Bigelow Ave. and Church St., the new depot pays homage to what was once there before – the original location of Plain City’s town hall, fire department, school, and other community buildings. “The vision for the Depot and Public Square brings excitement to our town and solidifies a place to gather as a community for many years to come”, said Mayor Jody Carney in the press release.
The first phase of the railroad depot was conducted on Friday, where Plain City held a ceremony with tours of the new facility. Looking ahead, future phases include a park with a railroad-themed play area, a splash pad, fire pit, green space for outdoor concerts and events, and even a marketplace for a year-round indoor farmers market and vendor center. Expect movies in the park, a holiday market, and even a winter ice rink at this space, too!
