Columbus mourns longtime employee at popular German Village shop
A German Village staple is remembering a staff member who might’ve helped you find that perfect read and perhaps a whole lot more.
The Book Loft shared on social media this week (Monday, Oct. 20) that a beloved coworker and friend, Brooke Bethel, died over the weekend. Within 24 hours, the Instagram post amassed more than 1500 likes and hundreds of heartfelt comments from customers, businesses and neighbors.
The book store said Bethel could often be found working amongst the stacks on his favorite genres: military history and politics.

“The empty place in the store and our hearts will never be filled. Rest in peace, friend,” staff at The Book Loft said.
According to an online obituary, Bethel – who was born and raised in Columbus – will be remembered as the ‘ultimate illuminator.’ The obituary reads: “He had a rare gift for making everyone feel seen, acknowledging their presence, and effortlessly finding the best in everyone he met. His warmth and genuine interest in others created a light that touched countless lives.”
Bethel was also a dedicated and beloved figure in the local Columbus soccer scene, a major fan of the Columbus Crew SC.
The obituary said a celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 8th at 4 p.m. at Valters at the Maennerchor (976 South High Street, Columbus, OH 43206).
