First of its kind ‘experimental museum’ by Smithsonian designers opens in Columbus next month
If you’re the type of person who can’t resist touching an art piece even though the words “PLEASE DON’T TOUCH” are posted on the walls, Columbus’ newest museum may be just for you.
And really, it’s for any teen or adult that’s looking for a different way to view the world.
Prototype, the 30,000 square foot museum located at the Audubon Park Offices along the Whittier Peninsula, opens on November 1.

The first-of-its-kind, multi-sensory, “experimental type of museum” features a fully stocked cocktail bar and six large staging rooms using high-end technology and virtual reality that will be constantly evolving.
If you’re imagining another COSI-esque museum, well, it won’t be quite like that. At all, actually. “We want to focus primarily on the experiences of adults and young adults,” Joseph Wisne, Roto’s co-founder, president, and CEO, said. “That area of museums tends to lose customers the most.” Admission is restricted to guests aged 16 or older. Guests aged 13 to 15 may attend with one adult chaperone who is 21 or older per teen, and certain events will be restricted to 21+.
The Dublin-based design company, Roto, are the creators of this museum. Their exhibit portfolio expands both nationally and internationally, with 250+ projects at places like Smithsonian, Getty Museum, Times Square, Universal Studios, plus COSI and The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
This Columbus-based company is now the leading museum design-builder in North America. “These types of museums need support, and we’re happy to help,” said Wisne.
Check out Prototype on Nov. 1, and visit their website for more information.
