32 year old restaurant closing; famous Arthur Treacher’s taking its place

We thought we’d break the bad news of a beloved fish & chips restaurant closing with the good news that another beloved fish & chips restaurant is taking its place.
Marino’s Seafood Fish & Chips, located at 1216 W. 5th Ave. for the past 32 years, is saying goodbye at the end of the month.
Harry and Rosemarie Kougendakis told 614Now that they’re excited to retire. “No setting alarms, just taking it easy,” Harry laughed.

The couple has been serving fried seafood delicacies since 1992, when they acquired the Grandview-area restaurant. Coincidentally, that same building used to be the famous seafood restaurant called Arthur Treacher’s, and now – it will be, again.
Harry told us that he can’t go into too much detail about the business offer, but when Marino’s closes, Arthur Treacher’s is making their comeback to Central Ohio and taking over the space. He said there will be a “pretty quick turnaround” – Arthur Treacher’s is expected to open “in a week or two” after Marino’s is done with service, which Harry said is probably the last day of June or a couple of days into early July.
“It was a good opportunity,” said Harry. “I’ve been in the food business all my life. 32 years, it paid off, and we’re ready to go now.”
Arthur Treacher’s was actually founded in Columbus in the ‘60s, and at its height of popularity, over 800 restaurants were slinging fried fish & chips. The last Columbus location closed in 2002. Today, there are only three left up in Cleveland, until they debut their new (old?!) restaurant this summer.
“We’ve made a lot of friends. We made a lot of people happy. There was a demand for seafood and we had a good product, good price, and we treated people nice,” Harry explained.
We wish the very best for the Kougendakis in their retirement.
