After closing in 2018, wildly popular nearly 80 year old bar surprises public by quietly reopening

Grabbing late-night drinks and grilled cheese at “The Dube” was a rite of passage for the 2010s hipsters. For decades, The Blue Danube was the spot for that dive bar charm but with a huge selection of decadent food to enjoy.

When it closed in 2018, after 78 years in business, a city-wide heartbreak followed. Since then, there have been teasers that The Blue Danube, located at 2439 N. High St., would make a comeback. City permits were filed last year suggesting a new tenant was moving in, but it remained up in the air if they’d keep it The Blue Danube.

But now, we all know. Yesterday, April 29, “The Dube” surprised the public, quietly reopening just in time for the OSU Senior Bar Crawl. They posted a hand-painted blue sign outside their door that simply read, “Blue Dube Now Open.” They also posted a picture on Facebook of their updated interior with the caption, “Did you miss us?”

They’ll be open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. from here on out, and 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Some of the food and drinks we knew and loved will also be making a comeback. No, the grilled cheese + bottle of champagne special has yet to make on their new, condensed menu, but a server took to Reddit to say they’re planning on offering that staple again.

For now, you can find appetizers such as onion rings, cheese sticks, wings, and chicken fingers, plus sandwiches, salads, subs, pizza, and some dessert. In the past, The Blue Danube offered plenty of vegetarian options, such as a black bean burger, but vegetarian substitutes haven’t yet made it to the new menu. There’s still time, though! After all, they’ve only been open for not even a full day.
