After nearly 60 years, beloved local deli announces closure

While it always hurts to see a local staple close, for this beloved deli, it’s a natural moment for transition.
Block’s Hot Bagels, which first opened in 1967, announced they would be pausing operations indefinitely following the passing of its founder, Harold ‘Hal’ Block. Hal was born in Coney Island, New York, eventually moving to Columbus and opening a string of Block’s Bagels. He passed away on January 17, 2025.
“This challenging decision comes as the family takes time to reflect and grieve, while also recognizing that with no other Block family members actively involved in the business and the bakery’s lease coming to an end, this was a natural moment for transition,” said Block’s announcement on Facebook. “While this marks a significant change, it is also an opportunity to celebrate the incredible legacy that Hal and his wife, Audrey Block, built—one of hard-work, dedication, and a love for bringing people together through fresh, hot bagels and schmear.”

There is currently only one Block’s Bagels left, located at 6115 McNaughten Ctr. The last day for homemade bagels and traditional schmear will be Sunday, March 2.
There’s a possibility this isn’t the end of Block’s though. “The family remains hopeful and looks forward to exploring ways to carry forward Hal, Audrey, and Steven’s passion for baking kosher bagels and fostering connection. This is not goodbye, but an opportunity to explore how Block’s can continue to serve Columbus in the future,” said their announcement.
